Summary:

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. It is the cause of 33% of female deaths worldwide and is the No. 1 cause of death in postmenopausal women. However, IHD, which develops when arterial blockage reduces the blood flow to the heart, is preventable and treatable. Dietary changes can address a number of risk factors, and specific nutrients (such as vitamin E, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber) are linked to a reduced risk of IHD. Most research shows that dietary patterns are more important than dietary supplements. In the last few years, new guidelines for heart disease have been released with significant changes from prior years.

Objectives:

The goal of this ischemic heart disease continuing education module is to provide registered dietitian nutritionists, nurses, dietary managers, health educators, and physical therapists with updated information on the role of diet and nutrition in preventing IHD in women. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the various risk factors that cause women to develop IHD
  • Explain recommended strategies to prevent IHD in women
  • Describe dietary changes and other modifications that define a heart-healthy lifestyle
