Summary:

Progressive supranuclear palsy, also referred to as Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome or Parkinson-plus syndrome, is a relatively rare but rapidly progressing disease. It is the second most common form of parkinsonism and is often inaccurately diagnosed as Parkinson’s disease. A thorough understanding of signs, symptoms, and impairments is important for early intervention and management to improve the quality of life for the patient and his or her family. It is important for the PT to understand and recognize symptoms to facilitate a referral to a neurologist with training in movement disorders.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program about progressive supranuclear palsy is to provide physical therapists with tools to identify clinical symptoms, evidence-based physical therapy, and additional resources for the family and healthcare team. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify four symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy that differentiate PSP from Parkinson’s disease
  • Identify three standardized measurement tools frequently used to assess PSP
  • Identify PSP symptoms that should be referred to occupational therapy and speech therapy

This course was very helpful. There is a lot of mis diagnosis of PD and the atypical Parkinsoan disorders are not understood well by primary care physicians. Late diagnosis leads to missed time with effective treatments.
