Summary:

Rhabdomyolysis means the breakdown of striated muscle; it can be caused in different ways in a variety of populations. The condition can vary in severity from an asymptomatic elevated serum creatine kinase to a life-threatening condition. It is important for PTs to understand the different etiologies and presentations of this condition, as well as lab markers, to be aware of and properly identify a possible risk. This understanding will improve patient management and treatment for this condition.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide physical therapists with information about the etiologies, symptoms, laboratory markers, management, complications, and prognosis of rhabdomyolysis, along with recommendations for prevention and treatment of exertional rhabdomyolysis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three causes of rhabdomyolysis and identify two mechanisms involved in its pathogenesis
  • Identify the major signs and symptoms of rhabdomyolysis and possible complications
  • Recognize risk factors for exertional rhabdomyolysis and describe recommendations for prevention and management of exertional rhabdomyolysis
