Obesity takes an enormous toll on individuals and society. Desperate people will take desperate measures to lose weight. Ever heard of the “21-Day Fix”? The “Acid Alkaline Diet”? “Volumetrics”? “Clean Eating”? “The Whole30 Program”? These are just some of the many diets that Americans are turning to in hopes of losing that extra weight. The reality is most diets fail, especially fad diets. With one-third of American adults and 17% of children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 having obesity, something needs to be done to fix this problem. As healthcare professionals, we encounter patients with overweight and obesity in many settings, and can have a huge impact on this epidemic by understanding the disease and learning what works. Patients who are counseled to lose weight by healthcare professionals are three times more likely to try to lose weight than those who do not receive such counseling.
The goal of this program is to empower nurses, dietitians, fitness professionals, health educators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to understand the key concepts and facts about weight management to more effectively counsel their patients to manage their weight. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence and effects of overweight and obesity in the U.S.
- Discuss evidence-based methods of weight loss
- List four traits shared by those who have maintained their weight loss
