Summary:

Adverse effects caused by pregnancy include constipation, heartburn, leg cramps, and nausea and vomiting. These problems can vary among women and even from pregnancy to pregnancy for the same individual. These problems are severe and even life-threatening for some women, yet others barely notice them. It is important for registered dietitian nutritionists and other healthcare professionals on the treatment team to be aware of the adverse effects a woman may experience during pregnancy because they can interfere with the ability to achieve necessary nutrition and weight gain. The RDN’s specific recommendations for foods, supplements, and appropriate exercise can help alleviate adverse effects and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Exercise also helps prepare the mother’s body for labor and postpartum recovery.

Objectives:

The goal of this educational activity is to provide registered dietitian nutritionists, dietary managers, fitness professionals, health educators, and physical therapists with adequate information about the nutritional implications of common adverse effects experienced during pregnancy, as well as the role of exercise during pregnancy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the adverse effects of pregnancy and how they might be alleviated
  • Explain the benefits of exercise during pregnancy
  • Describe the precautions a pregnant woman should take while exercising
