Children with neuromuscular conditions often rely on adaptive equipment to enhance function, prevent progression of secondary impairments and increase independence. One device recommended in children who are non-ambulatory or present with limited independent standing and require significant assist for transfers is a standing frame or stander. Pediatric standing and weight bearing programs are prescribed based on many factors, including clinician preference, patient tolerance, environmental limitations and best available evidence that either supports or refutes the medical necessity of standing.
This continuing education program is for physical and occupational therapists who work with children presenting neuromuscular impairments, progressive and degenerative diseases, and other conditions that may benefit from standing and weight-bearing programs. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
- Identify child who may benefit from a standing program
- Prescribe an effective standing program
- Integrate best available evidence to implement a standing program in a child’s home or school
This course is intended for an interprofessional audience, including physical and occupational therapists.
