The United States Census Bureau report issued in 2008 indicates that more than 10 million adults used a cane, crutches or a walker to assist with ambulation. Is there any indication, however, that these assistive devices are actually efficient and safe? How long has it been since you reviewed what is new on the market? Perhaps it’s time to take a fresh look at some of the research and information regarding available ambulation aids. It requires a professional to provide the best advice regarding functional use and fit of ambulation devices.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide therapists with information about common ambulation assistive devices used by adults, review changes in design features of selected devices, and present information on several newer devices.
  • Describe some of the research findings regarding ambulation assistive devices
  • Review selected ambulation assistive devices, including newer devices as well as devices with updated design features
  • Describe the potential advantages and disadvantages of selected ambulation assistive devices
