Summary:

Guillain-Barré syndrome was first described by French physician Jean Landry in 1859, and it was further described and named by the French physicians Georges Guillain, Jean Alexandre Barré and André Strohl in 1916. GBS is classically defined as an acute monophasic demyelinating polyneuropathy, which is characterized by symmetric ascending flaccid weakness associated with diminished muscle stretch (deep tendon) reflexes, and sensory impairment in a typical distribution (stocking glove) accompanied by autonomic perturbations. Incidence of GBS is reported as one to two per 100,000. Incidence increases with age, and it’s highest among people ages 50 to 74. However, there is a minor peak among young adults.

Objectives:

The goal of this Guillain-Barré syndrome continuing education program is to provide healthcare providers with an evidence-based review of the medical and therapeutic management of Guillain-Barré syndrome. After reviewing this module, you will be able to:
  • Define Guillain-Barré syndrome and list the subtype variations
  • Describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and prognosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Explain the medical and therapeutic management for patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome
