The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 provides a framework for therapy practitioners to develop accessibility consultation services, with training and knowledge of how the law can be applied to facilitate therapeutic services and accessible environments for clients with disabilities at varying levels of physical, mental, and psychological ability. By understanding the ADA, the practitioner can help individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible in the community, by promoting environments and attitudes to facilitate networking support systems, as well as supporting client and caregiver goals.

This accessibility consultation services continuing education program will introduce the practitioner to the parameters of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its practical application for advocacy and independent living services to enable people with disabilities to integrate into home, work, school, and community. The client-centered approach, based on the independent living model, provides a framework for developing these important services and for understanding the role of the healthcare practitioner in supporting the client’s goals. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the basic titles of the ADA and its applications
  • Discuss the consumer demographics and client populations who would benefit from accessibility consultations
  • Explain the client services related to the ADA
