Summary:

The belief that men experience a midlife crisis is largely a myth. Midlife is a period of transition rather than a crisis for most men. While challenges do emerge at middle age, most men accept them and adapt. Men at midlife often must deal with the behavioral expectations that society placed on them in early childhood and with subtle psychological and physical changes. Midlife transitions can be eased by establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles. This includes allowing emotional closeness with others; abstaining from tobacco; keeping body weight in check; eating a consistently nutritious diet; and resisting trendy quick fixes, such as testosterone supplements.

Objectives:

The purpose of this program is to instruct nurses, health educators, physical therapists and pharmacists on recent developments in the biopsychosocial aspects of middle-aged men’s health. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain male adult and early childhood psychosocial development and the link to behaviors and psychiatric problems of middle age
  • Describe the physical, sexual, emotional, and behavioral effects of testosterone in male adults at midlife
  • Describe health and psychological risk factors for disease and death for middle-aged men and healthy lifestyles that can mitigate these risks
