Summary:

Anemia affects more than one-third of the world’s population. Although not a disease in its own right, anemia is a condition that may be a sign of a deeper underlying problem. Presence of anemia indicates there is an inadequate number of healthy red blood cells and/or an abnormally low amount of hemoglobin in the body; this can interfere with a patient’s strength, endurance, and well-being. Physical and occupational therapy professionals must understand the different types of anemia and how they may affect a patient’s ability to participate successfully in rehabilitative care and to achieve and maintain functional independence.

Objectives:

The goal of this anemia continuing education program is to help physical and occupational therapy professionals identify the etiology, presentation, consequences, and interventions associated with the most common types of anemia. After reading this module, you will be able to:
  • Describe the main causes of anemia
  • Discuss different types of anemia
  • Interpret the laboratory values associated with at least two types of anemia
  • List at least three medical interventions for persons with anemia
  • Describe ways that anemia can affect participation in therapy
