Summary:

The National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs found that 14.6 million children (ages 0 to 17) in the United States (19.8%) have special healthcare needs. Caring for a child with a disability or chronic health condition is often a lifelong experience, and some have more than one child with a disability. Parents of children with chronic conditions face unique systemic barriers to caregiving. This course will discuss some of the most prevalent challenges faced by families and identify ways in which healthcare providers may help to empower families as they adapt and thrive.

Objectives:

The goal of this course is to familiarize healthcare providers with prevalent family reactions to having a child with special healthcare needs and to discuss ways to support families. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the concepts of chronic sorrow, transformed parenting, and normalization associated with parenting a child with special healthcare needs.
  • Identify children’s special healthcare needs and the experiences of family caregivers.
  • State two types of support a clinician can provide to families of children with special healthcare needs.

Convenient in my home and on my own time. I work full time and volunteer a lot of hours at the riding center for therapeutic riding for disabled children and operation strides for veterans with PTSD

This course was emphasized psychology theories and vocabulary too much at the expense of useful suggestions of me as a treating therapist. I do not need to know that a parent coping style is called XYZ, but rather what I can do as a physical therapist to help the parent reach a healthy coping place.
