Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a complex, limb-threatening and life-threatening condition that requires prompt and accurate diagnosis and immediate treatment. Because it is relatively uncommon, it is necessary to be alert for the signs and symptoms to allow for prompt management. There are 46 compartments within the body with 36 of the compartments located within the extremities in which acute compartment syndrome can occur. This module outlines the causes, diagnostics and treatments for ACS.

The goal of this program is to optimize the ability of healthcare providers to detect people at risk for developing acute compartment syndrome and to care for patients with this condition. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the physiological, surgical and anesthesia cause of ACS
  • List the “six Ps” that comprise the signs and symptoms of neurovascular compromise
  • Increase knowledge associated with the risk related to hip arthroscopy
  • Describe the treatment of ACS
