Summary:

While physical therapists may associate multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) with older, immunocompromised patients, MDRO outbreaks also can affect the general population, including unlikely groups such as school-age children and professional athletes. This course discusses the various types of MDROs that affect healthcare in our society. It defines the settings and disease processes of MDROs and offers information on prevention that should be incorporated into the daily routine of physical therapy professionals and all healthcare providers.

Objectives:

The goal of this MDROs program is to educate physical therapy professionals about MDROs and discuss interventions to decrease the transmission of MDROs in physical therapy practice. After completion of this module, you will be able to:
  • Describe the types, transmission, and disease process of pervasive MDROs
  • Explain the pathogenesis of prominent MDROs
  • Discuss measures that healthcare providers should use to prevent the transmission of MDROs
