Physical therapists can face a difficult situations when attempting to address patient behavior. They must balance their responsibility to the patient and his or her rehabilitation with their own rights to a safe workplace. The principle of beneficence commits medical professionals to improve the health and well-being of their patients. The APTA Code of Ethics instructs therapists to show compassion and caring and requires therapists to provide notice and referrals to patients prior to terminating service. It is each PT’s professional responsibility to attempt to maintain the therapeutic relationship when it is reasonable to do so and to be actively involved in transfer of care when it is not. However, these ethical obligations do not include tolerating inappropriate sexual conduct.
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide physical therapists with information about the prevalence of inappropriate patient sexual behavior and to offer effective responses at the level of the individual and the profession. - Identify five resources for support when IPSB creates a hostile work environment.
- Describe three actions the physical therapy profession can take to reduce the negative effects of IPSB.
